ART FROM THE QUARANTINE | WEEK FIVE | THE UNSEEN

MARLÉNA PAVICH
Unseen
So many of us walk this earth carrying unseen complex mental conditions and phobias. In honor of mental health awareness month, these photos explore the struggle of feeling “normal” in a society wrapped with expectations of what is and isn’t “natural.”
CHAUNTÉ VAUGHN
UNSEEN
I’ve been alone in my apartment during these quiet days. Simple home objects bear witnesses to my experience in this unusual time of solitude. Mundane quiet continues on, no audience needed - I am here.

Studio Tour
In regard to the unseen, I found myself thinking about the people behind the photographs, videos, paintings etc. and the unseen environments in which these pieces are created in. I wanted to create a piece that was pleasing to the eye but also a bit of a studio visit and a self portrait. In this piece the viewer is invited to take a look at my personal studio space and also my image.

Fashion Unseen : Looks From My Quarantine
In the last few weeks, we’ve watched the fashion industry come to a standstill. Prominent designers have declared that “there won’t be a next collection.” At the same time, the people have dusted off their sewing machines and reclaimed their power as makers. They are making masks and recycling old clothes into new fashion. The gushing torrent of consumerism and fast fashion has been slowed down. With that in mind, I’ve been playing around in my quarantine with creating tongue-in-cheek looks. A capsule collection of isolation. The materials are crude. The assembly is raw. Here are three images from this ongoing series.
ROBERT FLYNT
Untitled
All works are unique laser-jet prints on vintage graph paper from an on-going, as yet untitled series begun during the coronavirus-induced quarantines.
Shortly after all the shutdowns began, I was chatting/flirting with an Instagram fan - a dancer in Berlin that had somehow gotten in touch months ago - and since it appeared that it would be an even longer time before we ever might be in the same place to collaborate, I suggested that we try something NOW, via Skype. He was very intrigued, so I attempted to guide him through setting up a shooting space, much as I would if I were in the room. Most of the intriguing images came from shadows thrown on the wall, and fragmenting his body to fit in the frame, with the plan to paste him together later.
This has evolved into several shoots with three different performers on three continents: Berlin/Melbourne/NYC. I decided to pursue only performers I had not already worked with in the real world to emphasize the strangeness of the context, and qualities of surveillance and porn. I am turning these images around much faster than I usually would, so that we can build a vocabulary from one shoot to the next, embracing the degraded image quality, the “specimen” quality in their variously restricted environments, and the voyeuristic/performative nature of our interactions.
