ART FROM THE QUARANTINE | WEEK ONE | MAGICALLY MUNDANE
FRANK FRANCES
MUNDANE
I live in Jackson Heights, Queens, just 10 minutes from Elmhurst Hospital where medical personnel are on the frontline of the Covid-19 virus. The sound of sirens from emergency vehicles is constant, just about 24hrs a day. It has become the white noise of guilt. The question of how to help? 7pm cheers for all the people working during this time makes our house literally rock with enthusiasm.
Mundane is a project about transporting the objects in and around my house during Covid-19. Coping with the guilt of being privileged enough to stay home, art has shifted my perspective for the best and my goal is to help viewers pause in this moment. Anticipating the optimism, trauma, memories of now, this work is a study of hope. Each object has been used during this period to keep making creative projects with my son Marley, preparing meals, cheering, skipping rocks, water colors, etc. Creating work has become moments of silence while quietly singing praises to the people of this moment.

Given a second chance, all things hold beauty. It just takes an honest minute of your time to find it in the routine of the mundane.

For me, this brief was a chance to play with light and texture to create little quarantine vignettes. Some of these images take something simple and make it special or playful, while others are a nod to the confinement of these past few weeks and a visual representation of feelings it has created. Versace underwear included for good measure.
